12 Random Facts About Your Photographer

So I’ve been thinking…if you are paying someone to spend several hours with your family, capturing personal moments, shouldn’t you know more about the person behind the camera?  So here goes.

Some random facts about me:

  1. I am painfully shy.  Yep, that’s right.  Unfortunately, my shyness has been misinterpreted as being “stuck up” or rude.  I am really neither.  As I’m getting older, and with great help from my husband, it’s much easier to be outgoing.
  2. I’ve never taken an official photography course.  My friend Lezlie did sneak me in as a model for one of her portrait lighting classes at TCTC.  When I got my first DSLR camera, I wanted to take courses but couldn’t really afford them at the time.  I am mostly self-taught.  There are unlimited completely FREE resources on the web for learning photography.  And there are tons of others that are affordable.  Hopefully, one day I will post about a few resources.
  3. I am the baby of the family.  And I am spoiled.  I’m also the only granddaughter on my mother’s side of the family.  My grandfather used to say that he has 3 worthless grandsons but one golden girl who could outwork them all.  I think I had him snowed!
  4. I’m a self-proclaimed nerd and I love to teach.  I am an information junkie and love to share what I’ve learned with anyone who will listen.  Even if I’m not teaching kids, I’m always finding ways to help educate others.  I’m itching to teach a Photo 101 class for newbies.  My husband tells me I give away way too much information for free.  I can’t help it.  It’s instinct.
  5. I am an Amateur Radio Operator (Ham Radio)…and so are my dad, his father, his brothers, his nephew, and my brother.  My call sign is KI4UZX.
  6. If you couldn’t afford a photo session, I would gladly accept payment in the following forms:  Dr Pepper, Ruffled Chips with Dean’s French Onion Dip, or Papa John’s Pizza with ham and green peppers.
  7. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in June of 1999 (before my Junior year in college).  Since receiving treatment, I have maintained wonderful health.  It does not interfere with my daily life and thankfully, I do not have the horror stories that many people have with the disease.
  8. We have 2 indoor Border Collies who are like our children, both of which are trained to herd sheep (like in the move Babe).  We’ve also trained them to do things for us because we are lazy.  Sometimes one dog accidentally closes herself into a bedroom and can’t get out.  We’ve trained the other to open the door and let her out so that we don’t have to.
  9. I am a procrastinator.  It’s genetic.  Very few people in my family work efficiently without deadlines.
  10. I am a rule follower.  They make me feel safe and secure.  But I’m a “wall” breaker.  I like to challenge barriers created by ignorance or prejudice.  I like to find new ways to do things even if it changes the way we’ve always done it.
  11. I have a dream of becoming a secret philanthropist.  I want to become wealthy and secretly pay bills, buy groceries, and do other wonderful things for people who need it.  My mom used to work for a small-businessman who did the same thing (Mr. Allen Riddle).  And the generosity of others has been demonstrated to my family in our times of need.  I’ve always wanted to do same.
  12. My faith in Jesus Christ has made all the difference in my life.  It has only been in the last couple of years that I have learned that Christianity isn’t about rules…rather it’s about showing love to people the same way that Christ loved us.

So, now maybe your head can be filled with as much random knowledge as mine!

What To Wear – Fall Portraits

Mason’s 1st Birthday!

Happy birthday, Mason!

Mason is celebrating a very special first birthday.  He was born with a very special heart that has already required one open heart surgery and will require another surgery in September.  But don’t feel sorry for him!  Mason is strong, courageous, and vibrant!  He loves to crawl and play and investigate life just like every other one-year old boy.  His birthday party was packed with friends and family, as well as lots of water games!  Instead of gifts, all of Mason’s guests brought books for Books for Charley, a cause to donate children’s books to children’s hospitals in memory of Charley, another heart baby who earned her angel wings far too early.  In all, 55 books were donated!  What a wonderful way to celebrate!

And speaking of celebrating, I put together a little slideshow for Mason and his family.  I hope you enjoy!

To view all of the fun images from his party, check out his online gallery here.

To read more of Mason’s story, check out his mommy’s blog.  Please keep Mason and his family in your prayers as he faces surgery next month.  And pray that God’s hand will be upon the doctors and that they will mend Mason’s special heart.

If you would like to help out Mason’s family financially, contact me.  If you book a portrait session with me, I will donate all of the session fees (at least $60 per session) to the family.  What a great opportunity to help out a family in need and get something back in return.

Grandparent Mini Sessions

If you are a grandparent and you love your grandkids (what a silly statement-grandparents love their grandkids more than their own kids lol), then you need to schedule your special mini-session with your grandchildren.  These mini sessions will last 30-45 minutes and aim to capture the special bond between grandparents and their grandbabies.  The September 17 session day will be in the Easley area and the September 24 session day will be in the Walhalla area.  If you aren’t available either of those days, contact me and we can schedule a special date just for you.

Your investment for the day is $50 and includes one 8×10.  If you prepay for your session, I will throw in a set of 8 wallets just so we won’t have to deal with money on the day of the session.  Of course, you can always order additional prints to share with the rest of your family.

I am genuinely excited about these Grandparent sessions.  I can’t wait to see the end result!

A Few Personal Photos

The very first thing I started photographing when I got my first camera was flowers.  They were the only subject that would actually stand still for me.  I still enjoy photographing flowers.  To me, there’s something about their simplicity and beauty that make them irresistable.  Sometimes when Jerrad and I are riding down the road, I’ll make him pull over so I can get photos of all the unique flowers I can find.  I thought today I would take a break from the usual business and share a few of my favorite flower photographs.

Jessica & Steven {Belton SC Engagement Photographer}

Meet Jessica and Steven.  I had not met with them or spoken with them until the night of the session, but that didn’t stop up from getting along very well.  They were wonderful sports and even endured the heat very well…better, I think, than I did.  We started in downtown Belton at the square, walked across to the Depot, and then headed a few miles out of town to a friend’s farm.  We were able to catch a variety of poses and backdrops.  I love to capture true emotion and expression.  This session was full of natural expression.  And I must admit that I’m a sucker for the look on Steven’s face when he looks at Jessica…such love!  Jessica and Steven, I wish you many, many years of happiness!  See the rest of the images from their session here.

Ali – Class of 2012 {Pickens, SC Senior Portrait Photographer}

Ali is another one of my “children”.  I’ve watched her grow up her entire life.  And now, she’s a high school senior and will be getting married after she graduates.  She has a striking beauty that radiates from within.  Her compassion and loving heart make her even more stunning! She has a determination and drive that has helped her to overcome so much in her life.  I am proud of who she is and even more proud of who she will become. View Ali’s entire gallery here.
